QuickBooks Online Parent Item/Category is Missing

What to do when QuickBooks Online says the parent is invalid.

When ConnectBooks sends a settlement to QuickBooks Online, you may see the error "The parent is invalid" (or "The parents are invalid"). The hint says "Check if the item has a valid parent/category".

What the error means

In QuickBooks Online, classes can sit under a parent class. ConnectBooks builds each product's class from its Category (each part before a colon becomes a parent level). If QuickBooks Online can't use that parent class, the export fails.

How to fix it

  1. Go to Listings and check the product's Category. Fix it if it is wrong.

  2. On the Accounting Export page, open the ... menu at the end of the settlement row and click Resend to QuickBooks. If a list opens, choose Settlement (or Both). Then confirm.
